When Love Rebuilds What’s Been Broken
On a cold winter morning, our small team—Sofya, Berkeley, and I—piled into a car with Darren, a veteran assessor, to visit two homes hit hard by Helene. Each home was a world unto itself, a snapshot of loss and resilience in a community still finding its footing.
Our first stop was John’s house. His basement had taken on a few inches of water—not catastrophic, but enough to disrupt his life. John welcomed us with quiet kindness, his gratitude palpable as we assessed the damage and sketched out next steps.
The conversation shifted from drywall and repairs to music, and suddenly, John lit up. A fellow guitarist, he shared stories of his favorite songs, and for a moment, the weight of the storm lifted.
It wasn’t just about fixing a house—it was about connecting with the person inside it.
Our second visit took us to a neighborhood that told a very different story. Here, the floodwaters had risen to rooftops. People escaped through attics, some rescued by kayaks. We arrived at a duplex where Vince, the landlord, greeted us with an energy that didn’t match the devastation around him.
Vince wasn’t focused on his own loss. Instead, he asked about us—our lives, our work, and why we were here. He shared how his duplex had housed a disabled veteran and a refugee from Nicaragua, and despite the devastation, his concern was entirely for them.
“I’ve got to say,” he told us with a grin, “you’re my favorite type of Christian—the kind that actually lives out what you believe. I call you kind, sweaty Christians!”
Before we left, we offered to pray for Vince. We started by saying, “We know you’re not a Christian…” but he cut us off with a playful smirk: “Not yet!”
His words hung in the air, heavy with possibility. We prayed together, and as we walked back to the car, we carried with us a renewed sense of purpose.
John and Vince reminded us why we’re here—not just to repair homes, but to restore hearts. Vince’s openness to Christ through simple, lived-out love shows the power of showing up, sweaty and kind, and living what we believe.
Hurricane Helene's Devastation: We Need Your Help!
Hurricane Helene has devastated communities, leaving millions without power and some stranded like our World Race teams on Black Mountain. While immediate needs are critical, recovery will be long-term.
Adventures Relief, a ministry with 34 years of experience, is mobilizing resources. We'll connect you with impacted communities and ways to help. The situation is still very fluid so we'll post updates here as we are able.
Please pray for first responders and stranded communities like Black Mountain. Recovery will take years, but together, the body of Christ can rebuild.
